Irish bagpipe solo, Columbia 33336-F. Carney was a flute player from Irishtown, Co. Mayo, from a family which included pipers; he emigrated to New York City and worked as a sandhog building the NYC subway system. A tunnel collapse left him in a wheelchair, and he took up the pipes, also making the instrument. He was friends with the great piper Patsy Touhey, and inherited Touhey's pipes after Touhey died in 1923. Carney himself died in 1938.
This five part reel is transcribed in O'Neill's books with Touhey listed as the source. Older two part versions are found in other tunebooks, much like the Geese in the Bog, the jig on the other side of this recording, which Touhey recorded with two parts. Sligo fiddler Paddy Killoran recorded both of these tunes in five part versions, possibly sourced from Carney, who was renowned for knowing rare tunes and unusual versions of common ones.
